Unique Products for the Boomer Generation

Boomer Gear is made up of three friends (Boomers all) who met while working together at a high technology company and found that not only did we make a good team that got results, we were like-minded on many things and really enjoyed each other's company. In high tech, we all had our areas of expertise. One of us is a web programming and design expert, one is a product management specialist, and one is a direct marketing and sales whiz. Together, we were able to grow one company to over $17M in sales. Not too shabby!

We all have spent many years in technology areas like data acquisition, power, software, and instrumentation that is used in power plants, medical, and communications applications. Pretty heady stuff for the layman, but after a while, it gets boring for those of us involved with it on a daily basis. As with most tech stuff made for and sold to an engineering-based audience, the marketing and product management is strictly of a “just the facts” nature, with lots of tech-speak and performance/cost analysis - in essence, there's little chance to be witty or funny. Most of our customers, though nice folks - we're sure, typically were non-nonsense in nature. Problem is, we three like a little nonsense, and wanted to find a way to make a living while having a lot of fun. After a few (OK, many) nightly sessions and too much food and drink, we hit on the idea that we, as Boomers ourselves, could bring our expertise in products, web, and marketing to our kindred Baby Boomers. At least we could have fun trying. Boomer Gear was born!

The Boomer Generation spans those born between 1946 - 1964 and represents a 77+million strong segment of the population. The youngest members are now 45+ years old, and our oldest members are now entering the 63+ year old “retirement” (Gasp!) zone. Such a diverse age spread means our fellow Boomers have life experiences from the 50's through until today - and what a wild ride it has been!

From DooWop, Rock, Woodstock, and Disco, to Cold War bomb drills, flower power, and Wall Street boom and bust, we've experienced and shaped the last five tumultuous decades like no other generation before…and we're not done yet!

The Baby Boomer Generation consists of inquisitive, brash, trailblazing, and active types who are never happy with the status quo. We like to do new things, see new places, and be a part of a community of like-minded individuals. Our resilience and adaptability to new things often astounds our kids (and now, our grandkids!) You never know what we'll do next!

When researching the market for other companies that offered products for what they identified as “Boomers”, we were frankly, disappointed. Some were the usual corporate-style one-product-fits all generic offering. Others were a mix of some interesting products with a lot of geriatrically-themed ones. Most were, for lack of a better term - bland, me-too, dull, and sterile - far removed from what Boomers are really all about.

Conversely, when we looked around at Boomer social and information sites (and there are many great ones out there!), we found an active community comprised of so many varied and ever-changing facets of tastes, interests, and activities that it was impossible to categorize the Boomer market as a single type of anything! Guess that's what happens when your group is made up of people from 45 to 63 years in age.

BoomerGear was started to provide a selection of unique and useful products for Boomers of all ages. In addition, we wanted to do so while fostering a like-minded community of customers that help us shape BoomerGear into the best catalog of its kind for the Boomer Generation - by contributing your ideas!

This got us to thinking of how we could offer a truly unique product portfolio that would appeal specifically to real Boomers, the actual diverse group we are, not the one-size slice the mass marketers think we are, and tend to ignore. We set out select and present products for the Boomer, and resolved do it in a fun, sometimes irreverent, and community driven manner. BoomerGear is the result.

Like our community, Boomer Gear will be “open sourced” to our customers and ever-evolving, and will offer more selections and more diverse products as time goes by. We plan to do this by listening to you, our customers, and encourage you to email, call, (and if you must) mail us your thoughts, comments, complaints, and advice on how we at Boomer Gear can live up to our name, and be the best damn website you ever visited!
